Sommer's name also appears at the end of volume two, with a brief note indicating that Woodhouse died after completing this series of lectures. Sommer's name does not appear in the University of Pennsylvania alumni catalogue for the Medical School graduates of 1810.

- Biography/History:
- James Woodhouse was elected to the chair of chemistry, Medical Department, University of Pennsylvania, in 1795.
- Summary:
- Two volumes of manuscript lectures on chemistry given by James Woodhouse. Transcribed by one of his students, probably John Sommer. Woodhouse's concluding comments, as reported on p. 526 in v. 2, appear to indicate that this series of lectures represents his complete course in chemistry. A note from Theodore G. Wormley, dated June 9, 1895, is bound into the end of first volume, after the text. Wormley was elected to the chair of chemistry, University of Pennsylvania, in 1877. In this note, Wormley suggests that the lectures were given in 1808-1809, referring to a pencilled date of Nov. 12, 1808, on page 65 of the first volume. He also indicates that Woodhouse died in 1809.

- Pencilled note inside back flyleaf of each volume reads, "Rebound by Oldach 6/62". Binding is very tight, leaving virtually no margin in the gutter.
