Notes:
"This book is based on the five volumes of my Makers and finders: a history of the writer in America, 1800-1915 ... My literary historical series was the work of twenty years ... Meanwhile Dr. Otto Bettmann suggested that he would like to make an abridgment of my series with illustrations ... Dr. Bettemann has recast my work in quite a new form, cutting the narrative down to less than one-sixth of the original text while largely retaining its continuity and flow."
