- Summary:
- It is only in the 1980s that the problems of increasing life expectancy have become acute in developing countries. Tragically this has co ncided with massive migrations due to industralization and urbanization, as well as disasters both natural and man-made. and has resulted in severe physical and psychological suffering for many old people and their dependants. In this book Ken Tout takes the first in-depth look at this phenomenon and proposes a new approach to the special needs of the elderly in developing countries.
- In his guide Dr Tout sets out the available forecasts of increases in longevity, points to ways in which potential problems of ageing can be met, and describes programmes which have already been successfully adopted in a number of countries. He highlights lesser-known difficulties, such as the responsibility grandmothers may have to assume for family and community survival in the face of heterosexually transmitted AIDS, and the consequences of the disintegration of the traditional extended family in countries too poor to provide pension schemes. He concludes that in order to build structures for the future we must both stimulate awareness of problems like these and provide local communities with the resources to tackle them.
