"Bibliographically, this is among the most vexing of all Kipling first editions. The identical text block is known with two different publishers' names on an otherwise idential title-page and on the binding spine (Geo. M. Hill Company and Star Publishing Company [spine monogram] ... Furthermore, the t.p. is an inset leaf, pasted to page v."--Cf. Richards.
The decoration on both covers, in gold, consists of the profile of an elephant's head facing left with raised trunk surmounting a shield made up of stars, stripes, lions and an Irish harp.
"The Star Publishing Company took over the [Hill] plates in the year of publication, using the same two varieties of animal head crests [elephant and tiger] in gilt on the covers; later Star editions were lettered and ornamented in white. In terms of publisher/crest designation, then, the first issue is the Hill/elephant, the second Hill/tiger, the third Star/elephant and the fourth Star/tiger."--Cf. Richards.
