Summary:
Plenty Gifting is a social enterprise located in Perth, Australia, that was founded by Anushka van der Veen. The enterprise generates revenue through the sale of freshly prepared meal gifts purchased by customers for friends, family members, colleagues, or someone in need while directing profits from each transaction towards supporting local emergency food relief initiatives in Western Australia. Through this model, Plenty Gifting integrates a commercial gifting service with a social redistribution mechanism that seeks to combine everyday consumer behaviour with community impact. Since its launch, the organisation has developed a loyal local customer base and partnerships with community organisations that address food insecurity. At the same time, the enterprise operates with limited organisational capacity and relies heavily on founder leadership and a small volunteer support structure. As awareness of the concept grows, Plenty Gifting faces increasing pressure to determine its future direction. Expanding the business could increase revenue and its social reach but may also introduce operational complexity and alter the values-driven model that currently defines the enterprise. This case examines the strategic dilemma faced by early-stage social enterprises as they navigate the tension between growth and mission integrity. Students are invited to evaluate the opportunities and risks associated with scaling a purpose-driven enterprise, considering issues of market positioning, organisational capacity, partnership development, and impact measurement. The case provides a platform for analysing how social entrepreneurs can balance sustainability, growth, and values while building mission-driven ventures. To complete this case, students should have a basic understanding of entrepreneurial strategy, social enterprise models, and marketing fundamentals.
