- Summary:
- This case is based on a real-world social enterprise founded by Chris Anca to assist women who are victims of familial and domestic violence. Founded in Perth, Western Australia, Chris' Kitchen is a Work Integrated Social Enterprise (WISE) producing gourmet food products while employing individuals facing significant barriers to workforce participation. Initially established as a profit-oriented business, it subsequently transformed into a WISE that offers a secure environment for employees to reconstruct their lives. The enterprise integrates commercial production with a structured, trauma-informed employment model that prioritises dignity, predictability and relational supervision. Having achieved operational stability and demonstrated measurable social impact, Chris' Kitchen now confronts a strategic inflection point. Operating near production capacity with labour accounting for approximately half of revenue, the organisation must determine whether to preserve its current scale, pursue selective growth to strengthen financial resilience or expand its impact indirectly through mentoring and replication. Each pathway carries implications for mission integrity, workforce well-being, governance sustainability and long-term viability. This case prompts students to examine the inherent paradoxical tensions faced by social enterprises striving for both profitability and ethical integrity while encouraging the exploration of concepts such as responsible leadership, shared value and the constraints of growth in purpose-driven business models.
