- Summary:
- Guided by its vision to be a global leader in learning through play, The LEGO Group strives to help children solve problems, gain confidence, and develop essential life skills while having fun. Its mission is to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow through the power of play. With its base of bricks, LEGO enables children to build and rebuild anything they can imagine. Niels B. Christiansen, CEO of The LEGO Group, states in his 2024 letter to stakeholders that children are at the heart of everything LEGO does (2024 Sustainability Report, 2024). The company aims to create a better, more sustainable world for children to inherit while addressing environmental challenges, such as growing the economy while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and building quality, safe bricks from renewable and recycled materials. The LEGO Group has increased its investments in environmental sustainability and in the use of renewable and recycled raw materials in its products. It is working to accelerate the industry's shift toward more sustainable, high-quality materials. It was one of the first toy manufacturers to join the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) in 2003, and the LEGO Group remains dedicated to the UNGC. It has incorporated four key areas of the Compact (human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption) and the UNGC's 10 principles for corporate responsibility into the core of the organization. This case allows students to evaluate how well sustainability initiatives align with LEGO's mission to inspire children to build, and whether sustainability reinforces the company's brand identity and long-term competitive advantage.
