- Summary:
- As of the end of 2023, residential rooftop solar deployments generated enough energy to fully power 5.35 million homes in the United States. These residential deployments unlocked new capital sources from homeowners that accelerated the rollout of solar power generation and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the load on the electric transmission grid. Rooftop residential solar energy generation benefited the rollout of smart grid electrical systems by enabling peak shaving, net metering, and distributed local power generation. While the majority of rooftop solar deployments are economically successful, survey data suggest that 24% of customers were found to experience negative returns on their investment. Using this case, readers are introduced to discounted cash flow (DCF) sensitivity and scenario analysis techniques to inform investors of the relative performance of a given investment versus alternatives, the impact of various investment funding approaches on the investor's financial returns, the financial impact of unexpected operational shortfalls, and the value of the investment at varying points in its lifecycle. A supplementary spreadsheet is provided to enable further investigation of alternative sensitivity and scenario analyses.
