Summary:
This collective volume gathers interventions and debates from the International Anti-Punitivist and Penal Abolitionist Encounter “Justicias Alternativas,” held in Buenos Aires in November 2023. Conceived as part of a broader global strategy to abolish prisons, the book questions the naturalization of incarceration as the primary response to conflict and harm. Through heterogeneous voices—including transcribed talks and texts written specifically for this edition—it explores the political, social, and affective dimensions of punitive culture, highlighting how prisons perpetuate colonial, racial, and state violence. Rejecting binary narratives of victim and offender, the contributors seek to recover conflict as a shared social terrain and to imagine community-based practices capable of addressing harm without resorting to carceral logics. The volume articulates abolitionism as both a distant horizon and an urgent present task grounded in human rights, collective responsibility, and transformative justice. Provided by vendor.
