- Summary:
- Shostakovich's dark satire Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk is a searing, existential drama that has had a tortured offstage history. It was an immediate critical and popular success when it premiered in 1934 but dramatically fell out of favor after Stalin attended a performance and an anonymous article denouncing the work appeared immediately afterwards in the leading Soviet newspaper. Only towards the end of the 20th century was the score rehabilitated and able to reclaim its rightful place in the repertoire. During the 2022-23 season, Canadian Ukrainian conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson made her Met debut leading an explosive revival of the work, starring soprano Svetlana Sozdateleva and tenor Brandon Jovanovich as the illicit lovers Katerina and Sergei. Alongside them, the principal cast also featured tenor Nikolai Schukoff as Katerina's husband, Zinovy, and bass-baritone John Relyea as her father-in-law, Boris-- who both eventually lose their lives at her hands
