Discusses numerous legal challenges to and legislative issues associated with Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act (known as assault weapons ban) of 1994, which prohibits manufacture, transfer and possession of many semiautomatic assault weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices. Considers disposition of legal challenges to and proposals to extend and modify ban beyond September 2004. Also describes relationship of the assault weapons ban to the Gun Control Act of 1968
