Summary:
The relationship between art and madness has been an inexhaustible source for countless studies. This work presents a reading of the work of Arthur Bispo do Rosário, who, diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, lived for almost 50 years in the Juliano Moreira psychiatric hospital in Rio de Janeiro. Starting from a formal plastic interest, this work seeks to situate the discussions within the broader context of artistic creation, so as not to restrict them only to the therapeutic aspects of artistic practice or to speculations of psychoanalytic interest, conditioning the discussions about the work of Arthur Bispo do Rosário solely to the sphere of renowned artists.
The book offers an interpretive reading of the visual work of Arthur Bispo do Rosário, a Brazilian artist who lived for decades in a psychiatric institution and was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. From a primarily formal and artistic interest, it situates his production within broader debates on art, madness, individuality, and contemporary artistic traditions, going beyond therapeutic or strictly psychoanalytic approaches. The work also relates Bispo do Rosário's oeuvre to currents such as Pop Art and to artists including Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Claes Oldenburg, and Hélio Oiticica, and discusses biographical elements of the artist's life and creative process.
