Summary:
"The name of Jacques Rueff is commonly associated with his 1971 book "The Monetary Sin of the West", about the demise of the Bretton Woods system. His earlier book, "The Social Order"("L'Ordre Social", 1946), is much more relevant for the study of the ideal of liberty in a free society. The Liberty Fund edition of _The Social Order_ provides the first available English translation of his magnum opus, which argues that a strong relationship exists between economic order and social order. The book offers an important contribution to the philosophy of money and capital theory. It also offers novel normative arguments for prudent fiscal policy. In the book, Rueff advances an important distinction between "true" and "false" rights, from both an economic and legal viewpoint. Taking this distinction as a conceptual foundation, he critically examines the harmful consequences of budget deficits and price-setting measures on the economic order and, in time, on the social order itself. Although an analysis of inflation plays an important role in this book, Rueff also analyzes other phenomena as they relate to the functioning of economic systems from the perspective of the "real bills" doctrine. In laying out his case against "quantitative theory," he argues that prevailing analyses of inflation often misidentify its causes, and he maintains that money itself does not possess "causal power." With a strong nod to psychology, he devotes special attention to the role played by the level of necessary and desired cash balances. The loss of monetary and budgetary order, Rueff cautions, jeopardizes the social order as a whole. In keeping with other "neoliberal" theorists, Rueff argues against adopting a centrally planned economic system, warning of both the economic and moral drawbacks inherent in such systems"-- Provided by publisher.
