Summary:

Recent decades have seen an increase in family-focused prison-based support across prison services worldwide. However, much of this activity is being conducted in isolation across different jurisdictions and disciplines and so it can be difficult to build on the positives and limitations of each initiative. Conversely, funding in this area is limited, and there is pressure on nongovernmental and civil society agencies to provide impact reports to justify future funding. This, in turn, has led to an increased recognition of the need for research capturing both implementation and impact of each initiative. However, implementing high-quality research within these different applied contexts is not straightforward. The priorities for practitioners and researchers can be different, and what constitutes best research practice may be perceived to be an unwelcome and irrelevant intrusion within the applied context. Relatedly, there can be a lack of understanding of the role of research within this context as well as skepticism surrounding the experience and potential contribution of researchers. Maintaining meaningful relationships between researchers and practitioners is vital if high-quality research is to be conducted in a way that can support civil society. This Case Study outlines the approach our research team took to address these issues and achieve outcomes that captured the needs, voices, and expertise of individuals and agencies involved across a range of prison-based projects in Ireland. These included assembling an experienced interdisciplinary collaborative team, codesigning a manageable research approach, effectively engaging with a diverse expert advisory group, and adopting a reflective approach to the research context. We envision this Case Study to be of interest to students, researchers, and practitioners who are working in the space between theory and practice because the Case Study addresses core challenges and provides a solutions-oriented discussion.
