Summary:
Wanting to better understand veterans’ thoughts and feelings regarding the Afghanistan pullout in 2021, I conducted an online qualitative study using Qualtrics. Veterans are often considered a hard-to-reach population, with low recruitment and responses often plagued by distrust toward outsiders. This case study explores challenges in veteran research, including recruitment barriers and improving qualitative response quality, and emphasizes key qualitative practices such as data analysis and ethically reporting findings back to the veteran community. I describe how I overcame recruitment challenges by including my personal military background in recruitment materials, which helped build rapport with veteran participants. Responses within qualitative data can also be enriched by using multiple response modalities within a survey to understand research questions from different angles. The practice of reflexivity across the research process also strengthened methodology and findings. I acknowledge that encountering graphic content in the coding process can affect coder well-being, requiring oversight by the lead researcher to mitigate higher risk of emotional distress in sensitive research. Finally, I discuss the ethical importance of disseminating findings back to the veteran community and public. In doing so, I showed respect towards the participants and gained trust that may facilitate future engagement with follow-up studies.
