Summary:
This case study reflects on the methodological choices made in a recent study of international knowledge transfer by African returnees who have studied or worked abroad and returned to Africa, with a view to decolonizing research practices. Drawing on a social capital perspective, the original study sought to understand how returnees facilitate cross-border knowledge flows. The research process was designed to challenge extractive and hierarchical models of knowledge production. Through inclusive recruitment, culturally sensitive methods, and co-production with African scholars and Ghanaian interviewees, we brought African epistemologies and lived experiences to the fore. This case study, based on international knowledge transfer by Ghanaian returnees as a case study, delineates what it means to decolonize research in practice, by shifting from US- and European-centric frameworks and methods to one centered on African epistemologies, cultural values, and participatory approaches. Hence, this case study contributes to broader scholarly discourse on fostering more ethical, equitable, and inclusive methodologies in international business and management studies.
