- Summary:
- The original research analyzed video-recorded shared reading sessions with five emergent bilingual mother-child dyads from immigrant and refugee backgrounds using nine culturally relevant books. It examined how these discussions revealed convergent and divergent funds of identity between mothers and children, expanding their perceptions of each other or reinforcing shared identities. Each dyad listened to the book read-alouds via the VoiceThread app on an iPad at home. Without the researcher present, they paused the recording three to four times during each reading to respond to discussion questions and video-recorded their conversations using the same app. The questions were designed to prompt both parent and child to share their experiences, thoughts, and emotions in relation to the story. This case study focuses on the data collection and analysis processes, along with the methodological and practical challenges involved. It highlights the role of discussions around culturally relevant texts in exploring funds of identity. It also considers the benefits and limitations of using an online app to collect authentic recorded discussions. Additionally, the case study reflects on methodological, access, and ethical considerations in conducting inclusive research that centers cultural relevance, and participant agency. This case study will be useful for researchers engaged in inclusive, qualitative research with culturally and linguistically diverse participants. Readers will gain insight into practical strategies for designing data collection approaches that are culturally relevant to participants’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds. These insights may inform their own research design, data collection, and analytical approaches in similar contexts.
