Summary:

Sexual violence remains a source of harm for people across the lifespan and across the globe. Although research has made important advances in understanding how to prevent, identify, and support the safety and healing of sexual violence survivors, sexual violence remains a topic of interest and importance for research across disciplines such as education, health, criminal justice, and child welfare. Doing research with sexual violence survivors involves working with communities that have experienced stigma and engaging with potentially traumatic experiences. We therefore need to consider how we can facilitate opportunities for survivor participation that are ethical, empowering, and inclusive for survivors with a diverse range of experiences—from designing research questions through to the data-collection, analysis, and dissemination stages. This How-to Guide was written by two sexual violence researchers who have worked primarily using qualitative methods to design and deliver research with young people affected by sexual abuse, violence, and exploitation in a range of settings. This guide draws on practical experience and the wider bodies of research into sexual violence and ethical practice. It considers the sociopolitical contexts in which sexual violence survivors live (and research takes place), it considers how trauma-informed and participatory methods can be used to support survivors’ rights and mitigate the (unintended) potential burdens of participating in research, and it explores a range of ways that researchers might facilitate choice, control, and agency as means of designing safety and inclusivity into their research projects.
