Summary:
This case study draws on original research investigating the influence of xenocentrism—a consumer’s preference for foreign products perceived as superior to domestic alternatives—and formal education on consumer behavior, with a focus on the purchase of imported goods. Utilizing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), the study examines the interrelationships among xenocentrism, product attitudes, and purchase intentions, and explores the moderating effect of formal education on these dynamics. The purpose is twofold: to clarify why xenocentrism matters for consumer decision-making (by shaping attitudes and intentions with direct implications for market segmentation and positioning) and to demonstrate how an inclusive quantitative workflow can be implemented to study culturally embedded behaviors. Methodologically, the case highlights key considerations, including the challenges of recruiting a demographically diverse sample and the complexities involved in applying SEM to consumer behavior research. The empirical component draws on an online survey (n = 295) recruited via email and social media, with respondents approximately gender-balanced, spanning younger to older adults, and covering education levels from secondary to postgraduate. The instrument was delivered in participants’ primary language using back-translation. Informed consent, confidentiality, and anonymity were explained on the opening screen, where participants could agree to proceed or decline. The case provides practical insights into how quantitative research tools can be utilized to uncover nuanced behavioral patterns in globalized consumer markets. It is particularly relevant for students and researchers in marketing, consumer behavior, and international business, as it provides a practical example of how to implement quantitative methodologies, particularly SEM, to investigate culturally embedded behavioral phenomena. Readers will gain insights into the analytical process of SEM and explore how cultural identity (xenocentrism) and educational background shape purchasing decisions. These insights can inform future research and support the development of evidence-based marketing strategies tailored to diverse consumer segments.
