Summary:

Informal settlements contribute significantly to economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, they are partly the cause of some of the urban sustainability challenges across cities in the region due to their noncompliance with planning and development regulations. The policy approach to managing them has often been shortsighted, resulting in suboptimal outcomes leading to calls for sustainable management solutions based on multi-stakeholder approaches. This case study is based on research conducted into informal settlements in Nigeria as part of a donor-funded research program. It focuses on the Participatory Research methods employed in Minna, the Niger State capital city, and Nyikangbe, one of its informal settlements, as a case study to engage with and collect data from multiple urban sector stakeholders toward providing understanding of the operation of informal settlements and sustainable solutions. It highlights Participatory Research methods for engaging stakeholders and collecting data such as workshops, focus group discussions, interviews, and questionnaire surveys, and demonstrates insights into how they were operationalized, while noting practical challenges for their usage. The case study offers useful lessons to postgraduate students, policy experts, academics, and other researchers on the practical mechanics of these Participatory Research methods, which can be applied in similar multi-sector urban environmental settings.
