Summary:
This case study reports on the original collaborative cultural planning research project, which emerged as part of a partnership between Thompson Rivers University and the City of Kamloops. The You Are Here exhibition at the Kamloops Museum and Archives included a multimodal, cocreative approach that embedded student researchers in a living lab for two months of public cultural mapping, along with other forms of data collection. Our case examines the methodological and practical challenges encountered in using inclusive exhibition design to ensure ethical, participant-led data collection, with a focus on the cultural mapping methodology for this case reporting. In addition to a review of the methods and means of analysis, the study addresses challenges such as museum access barriers for some populations, the need to consider approaches to cointerpretation of data, as well as some of the difficulties of scaling episodic mapping within the typical timelines of municipal planning. By detailing how methods were operationalized, the study equips others to replicate, critique, and extend this approach in their research and more inclusive planning processes.
