Summary:

This Case Study presents the methodologic framework employed in a doctoral dissertation that examined the practicum education experiences of social work students with histories of adverse childhood experiences. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was employed for both data collection and analysis, providing a rigorous and ethically sound approach for exploring sensitive personal narratives. IPA facilitated a deep understanding of participants’ lived experiences while honoring the complexity and vulnerability inherent in their stories. This Case Study explores the rationale behind selecting IPA, its relevance to research with vulnerable populations, and the critical methodologic and ethical insights gained through this work. IPA is designed to address the unique needs of research involving sensitive topics and vulnerable populations. For this Case Study, I aim to discuss the significance of this methodologic choice and highlight the key insights gained regarding ethical and impactful research practices with individuals who have experienced adversity.
