Summary:
This Case Study reflects on the design and implementation of an inclusive classroom-based research project carried out within a second-year undergraduate scientific research skills course at Dicle University, Faculty of Letters, Diyarbakır, Turkey. Rather than reporting the results of a single research study, the case focuses on how the course itself was structured to teach inclusive research practices. The project engaged English language and literature students in learning the core principles of research design, methodology, and ethics through experiential, participatory, and reflexive activities. Drawing on the diversity of the student cohort, it illustrates how inclusivity was embedded at every stage of the research learning process, from collaboratively selecting topics grounded in students’ lived experiences to designing culturally and linguistically responsive data-collection tools and addressing ethical challenges in recruitment and consent. The project emphasized accessibility, linguistic inclusivity, and reflexive thinking, preparing students to consider power dynamics, positionality, and representation in their research. Practical and methodologic challenges included guiding novice researchers through ethical dilemmas, ensuring language access in multilingual contexts, and supporting reflexivity without compromising academic rigor. This Case Study will be useful for educators, research supervisors, and early-career researchers who wish to integrate inclusive practices into undergraduate research training. Readers will learn practical strategies for scaffolding inclusivity in classroom projects, designing bilingual and culturally responsive research materials, and supporting novice researchers in developing reflexivity and ethical awareness. These insights can be adapted for various higher-education contexts to enrich student learning and promote equitable research cultures.
