- Summary:
- This case study presents a multi-site qualitative research project examining food security and sustainable diets among marginalized populations in five European countries: Austria, Greece, Portugal, Sweden, and Turkey. Using a gender+ intersectional framework, the project explored how individuals and communities engage with healthy and sustainable food, identifying key barriers and enablers of behavioral change across diverse social, cultural, and political contexts. The research followed a two-cycle inclusive design conducted in successive phases, combining narrative and semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and participant observation. These methods were selected to engage hard-to-reach populations and to capture perspectives from both food consumers and producers. A stakeholder lens was also integrated to address institutional and organizational dimensions of local food systems. Particular emphasis was placed on recruitment strategies grounded in collaboration with local actors, context-sensitive adaptations, and trust-building within vulnerable communities, especially with women, migrants, and low-income groups. The case study provides guidance for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students and researchers designing intersectional, gender-responsive research. It demonstrates ethically grounded, people-centered approaches that balance local adaptability with cross-site comparability while addressing power dynamics, inclusive participation, and methodological consistency.
