Summary:
Research ethics are often taught as a necessary measure for institutional approval and compliance rather than a personal and ongoing journey of the researcher within the research process. This guide challenges the prescriptive framing of ethics by focusing on moments of messiness, discomfort, confusion, and doubt that arise when engaging with a minority community in a relationally complex research context. It is not just a procedural journey but also a personal one. I draw from my experiences as a researcher in simple narrative form to provide a realistic understanding of the ethical tensions and doubts in research, which further uncovers the labor of ethical reflections or thinking. This reflexive labor is not only rooted in institutional compliance but also within the researcher’s journey of navigating the field, community, and self. An acute awareness of positionality in communication with community does not resolve ethical tensions but instead intensifies uncertainty and discomfort. Messy but practical questions may surface uncomfortable and important questions about research being inherently extractive despite ethical intent and reflexivity. By centering my messy experiences as a researcher, I discuss how I navigated participant attrition and the doubt of whether ethics of care, connection, and communication for clarity can be too much. This guide does not revisit theoretical discussions of power, positionality, or methodologic choices addressed in my earlier work, but instead focuses on the ethical and emotional labor that emerges in practice.
