Summary:
This research project explores key experiences, struggles, and successes associated with underrepresented gifted youth. While there has been research (Callahan & Hertberg-Davis, 2017; Plucker & Callahan, 2020) dedicated to gifted youth belonging to traditional demographics (e.g., male, White, American-born, middle-class, nondisabled), this study seeks to better understand the experiences of individuals who differ from the majority in at least one characteristic.Participants were interviewed extensively through a semistructured list of questions. This technique was intended to both gain insight within predetermined major themes such as academic and social support, while allowing the freedom to pursue follow-up questions, topics, and requests for additional clarification, as needed. The transcripts could then be analyzed and coded using a grounded theory approach. Using Microsoft Word software (especially the text highlight and new comment features), prevalent themes and supporting responses are to be identified and categorized. As pattens emerge, the researcher explains the significance of each theme, discusses to what degree these themes differ from those associated with gifted youth of traditional demographics, and any potential long-term impact. The dataset file is accompanied by a Teaching Guide, a Student Guide and How-to Guide.
