- This case study is a demonstration of how an ethnographic study can be adapted to an online survey due to circumstantial challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers were the Director of Ed.D. and 11 doctoral students in a doctoral emphasis called Transformative Learning in the Global Community. The objective was to explore the social construction of key constructs such as transformation, emancipation, and empowerment among survey participants. The researchers engaged in a collaborative approach and they also filled out the survey for gaining an emic perspective as participants. Also, the survey questions were open-ended with type-in boxes, which did not confine the participants to only a few choices in a drop-down menu. The study collected 63 lived experiences from participants. Excel database was chosen over Nvivo, Dedoose, or MAXQDA for data management and analysis. This was because Excel was more accessible for a project that involved a large number of researchers. The findings empowered the researchers to create a new framework for conceptualizing transformation, emancipation, and empowerment in educational research. The case study showed how adaptations could be done for emergent educational researchers amid COVID-19.
