- Summary:
- This case study contributes to the methodological discussion on textual-contextual analysis in online media research. It argues that a multidimensional approach of the news discourse, which takes into consideration discourse both as a product and as a process, enables us to observe the pragmatic relation between the linguistic and the social. It also opens up a nondeterministic perspective for the analysis of the above relation since it defines context as subjective. The article rests upon an empirical study aiming at exploring how and to what extent online media report about European politics, as well as what factors influence this coverage. The study applies a comprehensive approach to media with variable institutional structure, resources, political leanings, and journalistic culture to investigate how the influence of online technology on the coverage of European politics can diverge according to the various interpretations of the technological context.
