Summary:
Even though it may be easy to assume that the benefits of online research may be universal, understanding the context is crucial to the effectiveness of online research methods, especially in developing country contexts. We learned some valuable lessons about research in a study we undertook in Ghana, West Africa between September and December 2020. During this period, we gathered online data from micro, small, and medium enterprise owners for our own individual research works using Google Forms as part of the German Government's DAAD African Centre for Career Enhancement and Skills Support Project. The challenges faced and the opportunities encountered during data collection required adjustments to the quantitative research design and also highlighted some often-ignored, but important issues that contextualize online research in developing countries.
