Summary:
This case shows how the Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) platform can be used in a mixed-methods research design to collect data from self-administered surveys and to recruit informants for subsequent interviews. The authors highlight four concerns that researchers face when using the MTurk platform and describe how they overcame those challenges: (1) the quality and level of informants' attentiveness, (2) potential threats to internal and external validity, (3) what to expect when using the MTurk platform (expenses and speed of data collection), and (4) how to recruit informants for interviews. Although the authors' research was in the field of marketing, the discussed concerns and recommendations could be applied to any field of study.
