Summary:

The conducting of Cultural Discourse Analysis in this case study is subject to three layers of context: historical and sociological information surrounding the elections, at the social level; a system of cultural frames, at the discourse level; and an archive of online posts, at the textual level. We apply this approach to incidences of race talk, as metadiscourse, generated from reader responses to news items online, in the political context of the 2020 parliamentary elections of Trinidad and Tobago. Archival data were taken from the Facebook pages of television media houses and the official websites of three major newspapers. Our primary sample consisted of data collected over 3 days: on the day before the parliamentary elections, on the day of the event, and on the day after. News reports during 1 week before and 1 week after the election date also provided a secondary sample of data from the websites of three leading media houses. The methodology addresses informed consent and the gathering of archival data online, the investigation of racialized language in its cultural context, and a range of ethical issues related to the investigation of race in language. These elements provide a rounded treatment of the theory and practice of Cultural Discourse Analysis, the processes of data mining, analyzing metadiscourse, and the ethics of investigating race in language, as informing a situated cultural interpretation of racialized language. The procedures in the case also suggest strategies for equity in sampling and interpreting data in similar projects involving race in language online, and address the challenges of data collection and analysis in multicultural contexts.
