Summary:

This case addresses the challenge of continuing a qualitative research study with senior citizens during lockdown by conducting the depth interviews via remote video conferencing and mobile phone interviews instead of face-to-face. The research aimed to examine the effectiveness of National Lottery funding for a 2-year project to create a resilient and sustainable heritage offer for a small market town in the East of England by repositioning it as a town of historical significance and making the heritage offer more appealing to residents and visitors. The participants were volunteers running heritage attractions and other stakeholders on a heritage steering group. The case considers the technical challenges of conducting the research online, the risks involved in planning research, and the social value of participation for the older participants who were shielding at home and mostly isolated.
