Summary:

Although academic projects can focus on answering pre-defined research questions or goals, some instead start with the data relevant to a topic, broad research questions or broad goals. For example, a researcher might start by wondering whether tweets could give insights into contemporary trans rights debates. In this context, goal or research question flexibility is needed initially to refine the initial broad goals into practical research questions or goals that align with the issues discussed in the data. For this, an initial exploration stage after data collection is needed to assess the content of the data, characterizing the types of topics discussed and the types of people involved in the discussion. After the exploration stage, research questions or goals can be framed so that there is sufficient data to make an investigation practical. It is important that the exploratory stage should avoid selecting topics based on answers to research questions, however, since this could bias the eventual results. This case study discusses an extreme example of research question selection when a project started with a dataset of comments on YouTube influencer channels and subsequently focused on commenters' reactions to bullying.
