Summary:

Sometimes, academic work in a field yields the necessity to expand existing theories. In such situations, modifying an idea requires an in-depth review. For instance, early studies about race tended to separate race from gender until the mid-1980s when black women scholars called for new theories and a more comprehensive approach leading to intersectionality theories. Emerging from a sociological perspective regarding epistemology and how we know phenomena, the extended case study method (ECSM) offers researchers an inductive process to modify a theory. Researchers can augment or generate new theories through an iterative process through narratives, specific documents, and digital resources.As a researcher immersed in studying the interdisciplinary field of workplace bullying, I have applied several theories from organizational theory, psychology, biology, ethnic studies, and women's studies that contribute to workplace bullying. Nonetheless, I do not find these theories mutually exclusive; to the contrary, workplace bullying requires numerous interacting manifestations to exist. Therefore, to incorporate many of these theories, I used the ECSM to develop an ecosystem of workplace bullying. Simultaneously, the COVID-19 pandemic stalled several research projects, leaving researchers to consider online and digital methods. In addition to ZOOM, historical narratives, environmental databases, and digital archives can support this research method. Therefore, this case study will highlight strategies to engage the iterative process found in the ECSM and offer researchers insight into conducting the ECSMs using online and digital sources.
