Summary:

This case study is based on a collaborative undergraduate research project that focused on the legacy of the Green Book businesses in Durham, North Carolina. The Green Book, published between 1936 and 1966, listed locations that were safe for African American travelers in each state. Students worked to complete a historical and cultural topography of the city, locating historical property records, photographs, insurance information, newspaper stories, and other ephemera that had been digitized. Digitized archives, while excellent, proved incomplete and missed out on much, which led to supplementation with original print material. Through this research project, students learned and applied archival research techniques, resulting in a final web-based digital exhibition. This case study enables students to develop sound strategies for working with digital archives and successfully navigating the issues they encounter along the way.
