- Summary:
- In this case study, we describe an experiment in which we collected quantitative data to determine if the presence of a smartphone impacted learning and if dependence on a smartphone mattered. We initially planned to conduct this experiment in a university laboratory setting; however, the onset of COVID-19 forced us to move our research online. We describe the process we took to select Qualtrics as our online data collection tool, and we delineate pros (i.e., ease of use; social media links) and a con (i.e., timing precision) of incorporating this platform in our study. We also discuss our incorporation of Reddit, an online messaging board, to increase our sample size but emphasize the need for incentives when collecting data outside of the typical university undergraduate participant pool. Lastly, and of critical importance, we illustrate the value of manipulation check questions to determine whether participants were compliant in following instructions. In our case, with our emphasis on phone placement, it was necessary to know whether participants followed our phone placement instructions; therefore, we included a question at the end of our study in which they reported where they actually placed their phones. Overall, the biggest takeaway from our study was the need for post-study questions to check the authenticity of data to make sure that we were measuring what we intended to measure.
