- Summary:
- This case study focuses on our experience collecting remote physiological data from human participants and adapting a laboratory-based stress protocol to an online platform in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the case study will discuss how we collected heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) data remotely and in real-time using a Polar® H10 HR monitor and a mobile application called Elite HRV©. It will also focus on the design and administration of a virtual stress protocol consisting of challenging cognitive tasks completed under time and accuracy pressure via the online Zoom© video platform. This methodology was utilized for a doctoral dissertation project which broadly examined the influence of sleep quality on cardiovascular reactivity to an acute stressor in a sample of undergraduate students. This case study will detail challenges and considerations specific to both remote physiological data collection and a virtual stress protocol.
