Summary:
Qualitative interviews are ideally suited to understanding processes and in-depth details of couples' lives. By interviewing couples separately and simultaneously, it is possible to capture the "he said, she said" without partners influencing each other's responses. However, due to procedural difficulties, the information is often collected only at one point in time. After completing our book, Cohabitation Nation: Gender, Class, and the Remaking of Relationships, which included interviews with 122 middle- and service-class young adults (61 couples), we realized that we wanted to know more about how their stories evolved. This case study details the methodologic challenges we faced and decisions we made when attempting to relocate and reinterview these individuals approximately 15 years after our first conversations. We share the strategies that were most (and least) effective for locating participants via publicly available data on the internet; describe how we dealt with maintaining confidentiality, particularly when partners were no longer together; and recount the advantages and disadvantages of our forced pivot to Zoom interviews when the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted our interviews. While challenging, gathering qualitative data over time can add depth and richness to what we know about how social class and gender impact families.
