Summary:
This How-to Guide looks at rapport in online interviews. With the recent push towards online research, many researchers are finding that the usual face-to-face interview methods are no longer the best way to conduct data collection. This move online can be seen as an opportunity for new focus for the qualitative researcher. This guide suggests that online interviewing can be a positive experience for both researcher and participant if the researcher has taken care to develop a high level of rapport with their participant. However, rapport in online interviews is not always easy to achieve. Rapport is often seen as considerably easier in face-to-face situations, as the researcher can rely on subconscious knowledge on how to build social relationships. In the online situation, however, much of this subconscious knowledge has to be adapted to ensure that rapport is built successfully. Finally, this guide will look at four strategies that can be incorporated into the research process to help a researcher build rapport for the online interviews.
