Summary:

This case study provides an overview of the changes involved in shifting my research from face-to-face to online methods. My PhD project is looking at Australian expatriates and their national identity and citizenship practices. The aim of the project is to understand changes to perceptions of citizenship and national identity that occur as a result of extended overseas residence. The research was meant to take place face-to-face but had to be moved online at the last minute due to COVID-19 and related travel restrictions. This case study reflects on the challenges of shifting to online research and presents solutions employed to handle some of the resulting problems. The most surprising and time-consuming hurdle was having to launch an entirely new ethics application to accommodate to the shift online. Of the changes to the research methods themselves, the shift to online recruitment proved to be the most challenging. It is important to be able to adapt to changes efficiently but without risking the integrity of your research. This case study is designed to provide students with an overview of some of the challenges of shifting to online research methods and to equip them with solutions and strategies to adapt to these challenges.
