- Summary:
- This case study examines the use of netnography-an ethnographic approach to online communities-to explore a creative grassroots Facebook group called Kamínky (meaning "little stones" in Czech). Kamínky is a nationwide online community where members paint small decorative rocks, hide them in public spaces, and share stories and photos of found pieces. The research was conducted by a single researcher as part of a broader project on evolving social rituals in Czech society. This case focuses on methodological processes: how the netnographic study was designed, the practical and ethical considerations of observing a Facebook group, and the real-world challenges of conducting qualitative research in a digital setting. Readers will learn how netnography can capture the culture and interactions of an online creative community, bridging online and offline activities. The case highlights strategies for data collection and analysis of both textual and visual content, ethical decision-making in an informal online space, and reflexive lessons learned. It emphasizes the pedagogical value of netnography for student researchers by detailing successes, adaptations, and mistakes encountered, offering guidance for applying netnographic methods to other contemporary digital communities.
