- Summary:
- What places have experienced high rates of mortality from COVID-19? Where is mortality increasing? And what is occurring where I live? These questions were part of daily life for the global population for most of 2020 and 2021. To help answer these questions, many people have examined government websites (i.e., Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, state sources, and county websites) and carefully viewed maps, charts, and graphs showing COVID-19 counts. The purpose of this case study is to showcase an online data source and then discuss how such a dataset can be used for (1) public health and social science research and (2) offer an example by considering the rural Southeast portion of the United States. Readers will learn how these data can be applied for spatial analysis and, in the process, become familiar with basic demographic and public health concepts. After completing the case study, individuals with advanced training in geographic information systems will be able to use these sources to develop their own maps.
