"This manuscript focuses on the experience of Italians from the region of Campania (in southwestern Italy) who migrated to Argentina and Canada c.1947-79, placing their migration in transnational context. It discusses how migrants forged ethnic identities in transnational contexts and how the transnational nature of their experience was an important source of identity making. The study focuses on elements of migrants' daily life, looking at manifestations of identity through language, food, and music. It makes the case that ethnic identity is fundamentally transnational, owing to migrants' mobility and to the global settlement of extended families and kin networks. The author draws on testimonies from 25 Campani who settled in major urban centres (Buenos Aires and Toronto) and their outskirts. Oral history is used in the book as a way to put migrants' narratives at the center and emphasize migrants' strategic engagement in the process of identity making. Chapter Two explores the ways that the lignée de femmes (a private network of bonds with fellow women) was used by immigrant women to ease the hardship of migration. Chapter Three reflects on how language, and strategic movement between languages, was an important part of the immigrant experience in both Ontario and Buenos Aires. Chapter Four unpacks how foodways shaped Campani identity, through importing goods from Campania, and mixing local foods and traditional methods. Chapter Five uses canzone napoletana (traditional Neapolitan song culture) to discover the ways in which music fostered a common group identity across cultural borders."-- Provided by publisher.
