This Dataset serves as an accessible example of descriptive-analytic research design in social science, particularly within the field of teacher education and applied linguistics. This learning material illustrates how to ethically manage and thematically analyze open-ended questionnaire responses collected via Google Forms from 50 Algerian English as a foreign language (EFL) preservice teachers in May 2021. The Dataset captures trainees’ reflections on the relevance of linguistics knowledge—covering phonetics, syntax, and pragmatics—to their classroom practice during teaching practicum.Designed for advanced undergraduate students in education and communication and media studies, this material emphasizes inclusive, context-sensitive, and ethically grounded qualitative analysis. Learners explore essential principles such as anonymization, cultural humility, positionality, and participant voice preservation, all of which are particularly vital when researching in Global South educational contexts. The Algerian context in this study is distinct because it involves EFL preservice teachers in a postcolonial multilingual setting (Arabic-French-English) within a highly centralized teacher education system. Linguistics is taught theoretically over 4–5 years at the École Normale Supérieure of Constantine (ENS-C), followed by a 16-week practicum.The procedure requires no specific software and can be implemented with basic digital tools such as Google Forms (for data collection), Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel (for manual coding and codebook development), and word processors (Google Docs or Microsoft Word) for writing analytic memos and thematic narratives. This approach ensures accessibility for researchers with limited institutional resources while maintaining methodologic transparency and rigor. This case enables students to develop practical skills in the preparation, coding, and interpretation of textual data while complying with international research ethics standards. The Dataset includes a Teaching Guide and a Student Guide.This Dataset enables students to practice anonymizing, cleaning, and ethically coding qualitative data from open-ended responses while engaging in reflexive interpretation. Ethical coding involves treating participants’ meanings with contextual sensitivity, fairness, and respect and avoiding reductive or decontextualized interpretations (Tracy, 2024). Students will develop transferable skills in ethical qualitative research applicable to educational and social research settings.
