Summary:
This guide aims to build the capacity of researchers to undertake more ethical research with people of refugee background by introducing feminist ethics of care in relation to forced migration research. While not new, care is a term that is receiving renewed attention across multiple fields, and its relevance to ethical approaches to forced migration research has increasingly been pointed to. In this guide, we first provide a brief overview of feminist ethics of care, focusing on its origins, and highlighting some of the key thinkers who have contributed to its development. We then look at the relevance of feminist ethics of care to forced migration research, and how it might diverge from, or enhance, procedural, institutional, or traditional approaches to ethics. Finally, we look at some of the ways in which we might apply an ethics of care when engaged in qualitative research with people of forced migration background.
