- Summary:
- During the years 2017–23, a small tight-knit neighborhood in Newcastle, Australia, challenged the imposition of a multiyear sporting event on their community. To liberate information that they felt was being withheld from them, the community used participatory research and documentary research. In challenging the official narrative, the community articulated and explored their profound concerns about the nature of knowledge, who controls information, and how it is used. This Case Study raises questions about the nature and purpose of research, its role in serving a community (the people), and how it can be used to challenge the agendas of outside and more powerful forces. The lessons from Newcastle potentially can inform community-based research to challenge power imbalances in other contexts.
