- This case study reflects on the methodological design and ethical dimensions of conducting inclusive, mixed-methods research on urban community gardens in the marginalized Cape Flats area of postapartheid Cape Town, South Africa. Drawing on fieldwork conducted between 2020 and 2021, the study explores how a convergent mixed-methods approach was developed to address the complex social, spatial, and political realities of community gardeners operating in Cape Town. The case focuses on three key methodological pillars: the integration of qualitative and quantitative methods; context-sensitive and multilingual sampling strategies aimed at amplifying underrepresented voices; and reflexive, ethical field engagement that foregrounds positionality and coproduced knowledge. In navigating institutional gatekeeping, infrastructural limitations, and sociopolitical sensitivities, the research design evolved to balance academic rigor with cultural responsiveness and community relevance.
