Summary:
This case study draws on the Equity and Cash Transfers in Colombia project which examined the magnitude and drivers of exclusion errors in the country’s social assistance programs. Using a mixed-methods approach—including national household survey analysis, interviews with policymakers and experts, and focus groups with socioeconomically vulnerable populations—we reflect on key methodological and ethical challenges. These include triangulating narratives across diverse sources and addressing points of convergence and tension between quantitative and qualitative findings. We emphasize the importance of researcher positionality, ethical reflexivity, and inclusive validation strategies, such as member checking through an Advisory Group, composed of both beneficiaries and individuals erroneously excluded from the social programs. This group played a critical role in shaping policy recommendations and improving data analysis. This case provides practical insights for students and early-career researchers working with marginalized populations or evaluating social policy. It demonstrates how to integrate diverse data sources in inclusive, ethically grounded, and reflexive mixed-methods research to inform equitable policy decision-making.
