Summary:
This Dataset introduces readers to qualitative photo analysis that uses photo data taken at the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas (1954) national historic site in the United States. This site commemorates the U.S. Supreme Court case that struck down the separate-but-equal doctrine that legislated racial segregation. Readers will be introduced to concepts such as bricolage qualitative analysis, the absent-present (or the visible and invisible) in photos, purposive sampling, deconstruction, poststructuralism, thinking with theory, and photo-specific elements such as proximity, boundaries, and representation. The photos in this Dataset were selected to illustrate the interior and exterior of the historic site while also calling to attention the intersections between representation, landscape, and social and political specters contouring official public knowledge sites. This work contributes to existing scholarship focused on arts-based inquiry and to qualitative analysis practices that work with and against interpretivism. The Dataset files are accompanied by a Teaching Guide and a Student Guide.
