This case study draws from Riding the Tides: Black Girls Surfing Expressions in Jamaica, an interdisciplinary project that combined Black Feminist Ethnography and Photovoice to explore how eight Jamaican girls (ages 15–18) learned to surf through Surf Girl Jamaica. Grounded in Black feminist and Caribbean feminist epistemologies, the study positioned participants as coresearchers and storytellers, centering their voices, images, and reflections to examine belonging, identity, and joy within a sport historically defined by racialized and gendered exclusions.The case focuses on the methodological and practical dimensions of integrating ethnographic and participatory visual methods in a small-island context. It discusses relational ethics, insider/outsider dynamics, and the challenges of balancing research design with environmental unpredictability, cultural nuance, and youth participation. The project demonstrates how culturally grounded, care-centered methodologies can foster reflexivity, trust, and shared meaning-making while disrupting extractive research practices.Readers will learn how to design and implement inclusive, intersectional approaches that treat research as a collaborative and healing process.
